Editing Techniques In A Music Video

This music video starts with a close up shot of Marina's lips, this suggests seduction this is an example of a visual effects as it has zoomed in on the lips, this shot then slowly zooms out to show she is actually blowing out a birthday cake and not seeking seduction as previously thought. There is then a jump cut showing some party goers attacking the outside of the whitehouse, the camera then cuts back to the original shot where the candle is blown out. This is used to represent that the party lifestyle is quickly over. If you look away for a split second then its all gone.

The next shot is of her holding the door open, she doesn't pay attention to anyone who enters, this is used to show her lack of enthusiasm in modern day culture. She then turns around and sings to herself in the mirror and then turning to the camera.
This clip uses continuity editing the clip starts as she lets guests into her house for a party. as the clip develops guests are shown dancing and having a good time, although it does not show the end of the party but it ends at the peak of the party. Two different situations are used in the same clip, these are of the same location, but one is of a party and the other is of her alone in her appartment. This is known as cross cutting.

Before the chorus Marina is overcome by a bright light, followed by a low angle shot. This is used to show she has been given power, this leads us to expect a strong powerful chorus.

Although the main story line is of linear narrative it has frequent flashbacks to when she was at her prom. By having two seperate locations she manages to create montage editing, as she can associate the prom queen being a unachiever, she then montages her in her geeky days to her current success.
