The purpose of articles are to give an insight look into the TMG’s favourite band.

Rock Sound and Kerrang!’s articles have a introductory paragraph, here information is given about early life, recent tours, previous albums and the production of the upcoming album. While Q magazine tends to go straight into the interview, both concepts work well as the Q style is good if the reader has a good knowledge of the featured artist. Generally articles have enlarged letters, this is so the audience focuses their eye on that key area, this is why this enlarged font is used on the first letter of the article or at a important part .(such as an exclusive) All articles are laid out in about 3 columns with at least 2 separate paragraphs on each column.

On the majority of articles their is a singular image spreading across one page and a small part of the text page, this is to create a flowing look so the audience can easily switch between the two pages. On more formal magazines such as Q they have a singular image within the text with a sub-heading, this is used to aid the reader with understanding what the journalist is trying to get across.

In the centre of the text there is usually a pull quote, this is surrounded by a clear box or shape matching the rule of 3 colour co-ordination. This is favourable amongst readers as it urges them to read on. They are cleverly designed as the quote isn’t in bold in the main text so the reader has to read through the whole article to find this, that is why this pull quote is in the second half of the text.

In my magazine i am going to include one large image covering one page and slightly into the text page, with one or two images at the bottom with a thick black border around them so they are clearly separate from the focused image. I will include three columns of text within my article so it will tesselate well. I will include a large font, with a unique twist to draw the reader in. I will also include a sub heading with a coloured/patterned line underneath to separate this from my main text.

My article is based on Ben Daniels within my magazine he is a upcoming rock star, he has already made 2 albums but is generally un heard of. The article will promote his upcoming tour and give the readers an incite into his personal life (common in most magazines at the start of the article). I will edit the images either using the Colour Splash App, iPhoto or within Photoshop CS3. I aim to make the images black and white, therefore matching the overall theme of the magazine (dark and twisted), with the Colour Splash App you can section off which part of your image to leave coloured, therefore i could keep a rose, that he is holding colourful. I would use this to focus the eye on the rose which would be central therefore giving a deeper meaning to the rose and the audience can see the whole imagine at once.

Tim Burton Inspiration

This is a trailer for the upcoming film alice in wonderland directed by tim burton. I have decided to embed this clip as it shows the depth of twisted imagination that i wish to go into for my magazine. I am going to take inspiration from Tim Burtons work into my magazine, even though his main focus is on film. He has produced some earlier such as the melancholy tales of oyster boy. Which are a selection of images and poems. I am going to familiarise myself with tim burton films particularly the corpse bride, i wish to draw little characters to have surrounding my contents page and double page spread, this way there can be a little story resembled within the characters as the story is told.

Development of New Fonts

After showing some research for fonts in my research and planning powerpoint, i have decided to explore the website www.fonts.com I have decided to use this as Photoshop's fonts are very restrictive to my genre of magazine. To access fonts from this website i have set up an account and once downloaded these fonts are included into Photoshop's memory. A really interesting font i have discovered is "Dumb" font this looks really interesting as it is very indie styled and looks good on a minimalistic background this looks really impressive for the heading for the double page spread. For my mock up of a title page featuring lostprophets, i used a cube/retro font to create a futuristic look to possibly use. On the other hand this font can give the false impression that this magazine is a pop or old skool magazine. By giving a false impression this would stop potential rock fan readers into opening the background.

From Research into my Target Market i have discovered the effectiveness that All Saints use in their modelling shoots. They use really distressed and abandoned backgrounds, they use this to match their style of clothing and to appeal to their Target Market.

I have used some similar backgrounds taken from Google Images and Flickr. I have used this as these are test shots to find out if my magazine and models would suit this background. All saints background have very limited colour but they are not plain. They have various shades of greys and distressed beige. What I really like about there theme is the emotions expressed, they show Distressed, Loneliness, Hope and a Depressing look. This is useful as this is the same theme I aim to use in my magazine.

Positions of Models (Experimenting Within College)

I like this picture as I really like the lighting and the colour contrast. The bad points about this are that it has a very plain and limited backdrop and would probably work best if i cut out this picture using the lasoo tool. Also the hair is over the models face, it should be swept to one side to enhance their facial features. To make this shot even better i should have taken it at a lower angle or used some lighting from behind.



This is one of the more unique shots that i took. It features my friend Bradley Cooke-Catcheside outside our college. We used what props we have available which in this case was the two pillars. I feel that the lighting could have been improved drastically. With two spot lights on the floor and the shot being taken at night would emphasise the location and position of the model.



I really love the lighting from this shot, this is taken from a staircase within our college. The lighting is from a high voltage bulb on the second floor. As this has produced such good effects, i will consider using high angle lighting in my shots. However I dont like the location of my shot. It would look more effective if this was a historical staircase or in a much darker location to follow the trend of my magazine.

This test shot really impresses me, with no industrial lighting and on a dark day this really stands out. The mood is perfect, it resembles loneliness and help. Also the position of the model is how i intend this to look for my magazine. The only downside is the clothes the model is wearing, they are too baggy and of the opposite genre in which i am aiming at. For my final photo shoot, my model needs to be wearing clothes shown in my target market powerpoint presentation.



This shot has some really good lighting, even though this is taken in a really unique and different place, a vending machine. The lighting here brings out the contours of the face and detailing of the eyes and hair. In my final shot i could have my model leaning against a glass panel with light reflecting onto this.

I really like this shot as it is complex. My model could be within these branches, but quite close up to use on a front cover shot, this image would look really good in monotone, and with the model partially in colour. It would work with a traditional, stereotypical view of a gil. e.g like a pokadot dress. This would stand out really well.



This image had varying tones of color which work well, the image covers too much background width ways, so to solve this i could use a chair for my model to sit on in the left part of the shot. This would make the reader question themselves of why this chair is in the shot which is what i am trying to aim for.

Test Shots Part 1

. In this first shot I really like the grass on the bottom of the shot. I would position a model half way between where the camera is situated and the tree. I really detest the natural sunlight in the top left hand corner, to still use this style of shot I would have to shoot at a different time of the day to keep a full naturalistic setting. Or I could film at night or first thing in the morning where the sun is low in the sky where I could use spot lights aiming side on at the model. Another point about this shot is that the tree is quite dull and overgrown. As I can shoot there as it is a publically owned piece of land I cannot cut off branches of the tree so I would have to shoot from a different angle.
